Reading’s Voluntary Sector

Reading’s Voluntary, Community and Faith (VCF) sector is incredibly diverse, with approximately 600 different groups working for the benefit of the wider community here in Reading. It is believed that there are approximately 300 groups and organisations that work with children, young people and their families in some way, which represents a sizeable majority in terms of the whole of the sector. These organisations are supported by RCVYS.

Reading Voluntary Action (RVA) provides information, access to resources, volunteer recruitment, and training to people to work in or with charities, community groups and voluntary organisations. They also provide advice services, covering all aspects of running an organisation from start-up, through fund raising advice, recruitment, management and governance.

The Alliance for Cohesion and Racial Equality (ACRE) was set up to promote equality across the 9 protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act 2010 (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex/gender, and sexual orientation); and to promote community cohesion in Reading. To achieve these, they:

  1. Created the Equalities Alliance – a pan equality partnership of organisations and individuals to act as advocates for equality.
  2. Empower community organisations to engage, integrate and contribute to promoting the cultural diversity of Reading.
  3. Support black and ethnic minority families that care for children with disability and additional needs.
